RMIT Art Gallery
Synopsis
Transcript
To the general public, or at least to me and my friends, galleries have always been about buildings that displayed cool art. Well… in the case of the RMIT Gallery, it’s a little different. Located just off Swanston Street, they do have a central building dedicated to holding student art models. However, when walking around the Melbourne CBD you’ll find many murals and street artworks made under the gallery’s name. Tending to be overlooked, these works are hidden gems that redefine what it even means to be a ‘gallery’? Instead of limiting itself to a single location, the university has turned the spacious bustling city into its very own canvas.
One tends to perceive galleries as big buildings that hosts the works of others inside... but is that really the only way a gallery can be? RMIT explores an under valued approach to what makes an art museum.
